Spectrum provided key design elements in a unique Pukekohe community housing development with a vision for a better future.

This Pukekohe development by Ember Wellbeing Trust and its subsidiary Kāinga Haumaru, was designed specifically to provide sustainable long term tenancy for people who have used mental health services.

Designed by architects Ashton Mitchell, the subdivision features 14 new homes comprised of eight one-bedroom units, and six two-bedroom units, plus a communal garden, barbecue area, sensory garden and children’s play space.

Spectrum provided a range of products that integrate seamlessly into the overall design and contribute to the architectural concepts of guardianship, care and support.

Creating security and safety
Spectrum’s Seamless Fin balcony balustrade, Seamless stair balustrades and handrails are located throughout the grounds, offering added safety and security and creating a sense of protected space for residents. Spectrum’s cantilevered canopies also offer residents shade and cover from wet weather. Vertical louvres added privacy and seclusion — especially important to units near accessways, entrances or shared areas.

LEP Construction Ltd’s Site Manager John Ham said during the inspection process, Council’s feedback about Spectrum’s commitment to quality and their record of compliance was an unexpected bonus.

“When the Council were doing their inspections, they asked us, ‘who’s doing the balustrading?'” he says. "Once they heard it was Spectrum, they knew it would be fine, they had that confidence.”

Delivering a sense of individuality
Spectrum custom louvres are located across the ground and first floors, as well as the wider complex. Utilising their diverse range of sizes, heights and colours, Spectrum delivered a fresh design, driving a sense of individuality across each of the units.

That included the vertical louvres, which offer privacy for each of the units.

The variation in sizes presented a potential hurdle, but Ham said the Spectrum team had it under control the entire way.

“Working with the Project Manager from Spectrum, he was more than accommodating if I needed something from them. We brought them in early, asked what they needed, and everything went smoothly."

“For such a high-spec job there were really no problems, everything went in like clockwork," says Ham. “100% I would work with them again. I’ve got big jobs coming up in the future. Anything like that, I’m going to get these guys every time, no need to shop around.”

Ham said Spectrum’s contributions to the project assisted with an overall flawless build process.
